What does an apple taste like?

An Irish proverb says "when the apple is ripe it will fall." I have also heard "The apple does not fall far from the tree," and "One bad apple will spoil the bunch." Apples are a important part of history. Jonny Appleseed, knew the value of an apple. He spent 50 years growing apples trees. Johnny Appleseed’s dream was for a land where blossoming apple trees were everywhere and no one was hungry. Even after 200 years some of his trees still bear fruit. Everyone knows what an apple tastes like, right? Well, I thought we would try it out. Apples were all on sale this week.

Here is what we did:

We gathered different colored apples and tried them. We had a Golden Delicious, Gala, Red Delicious and a Granny Smith.

Apples are my son's favorite fruit.

While eating, I heard words like: lemony, sugary and yummy.

We cut one of the apples from side to side around the middle instead of top to bottom. The seeds inside the apple make a star. There is a star inside of every apple.

This little poem comes from Annmarie on the Teacher's Net Early Childhood Chat Board-
The Apple Star
Take an apple round and red
Don't slice down
Slice through instead
Right inside it you will see
A star as pretty as can be!
Apple Tree
Author unknown
Way up in the apple tree
Two red apples smiled at me
I shook that tree as hard as I could
Down came the apples
Mmmm - were they good!

Here are some fun activities to do with apples.
Conclusion:
I have had plenty of apples in my life. I love to eat them, but I have never experienced an apple like I did today. I knew there were some that were sweet and some that were tart, but tasting them together really showed the difference. My kids loved tasting the apples. I loved to hear them find the differences in the apples as well as the similarities. If you try this experiment, be aware that eating a sweet one before eating a tart one really makes your mouth pucker.

  1. I really love this post. Not just because it was a fun experiment and that the kids are so dang cute, but I absolutely love the first photo of the apples. It's so perfect with the background window and light, the multi-colored apples, and the shadows in front. I would seriously put that photo on a wall!
